Overview of Learning Disabilities

Qualification objectives

The objective of this qualification are to support a role in the workplace where the individual may work or interact with people with learning disabilities.

Around 1.5 million people in the UK have a learning disability

Owing to the fact that they are likely to find it more difficult than others to describe their symptoms, a good knowledge of legislation and the healthcare system, as well as an understanding of signs and symptoms of various conditions, is essential for anyone working with individuals with learning disabilities.

Who is it suitable for?

This qualification is designed for learners with an interest in, or who are already working with, people with learning disabilities in a variety of roles.

Course units

To be awarded the Level 2 Certificate, staff are required to successfully complete 6 mandatory units.

This unit covers the potential delays and difficulties in speech, language, and social development sometimes faced by individuals with autism. It also covers methods and strategies that could be used when communicating with an individual with autism.

It considers when individuals might be particularly vulnerable to abuse and what a learner must do if abuse is suspected or alleged.

Introduction to personalisation in social care

This unit is aimed at those working in a wide range of settings. It introduces understanding of how personalisation affects the provision of social care services, with a focus on the systems, skills and support needed to implement personalised provision.
